Girls U14A - Buzzards vs Blackheath & Elthamians GU14 1

The scoreline might suggest this was simply an awful long way to travel for a right battering, but that would be to ignore the positives that the Buzzards can take from their journey through the Silvertown tunnel to SE London.

Ealing began well in their first match of Tier 2A (rev), following London Hockey’s questionable mid-season league shake-up. Jess made it 1-0 Ealing in the second quarter, finishing on the reverse after Elena’s PC effort was saved. Blackheath levelled 5 minutes later from a deflected PC strike hit hard and low. This should have been a warning, as three further PC goals followed in the third quarter. Two more late goals produced a scoreline that rather flattered the opposition.

The positives? Non-stop running from all the Buzzards, much better passing between the backs, the usual rapid breakaways from the midfielders, improving communication on the pitch, and fantastic input to team discussions with coach Alex in the intervals. The undeniable highlight? When a Blackheath midfielder tried some 3D skills on Maria, who took the ball off her in mid air and “egg and spooned it” 50 yards down the right wing. Anything she can do . . . .
