The impressive clubhouse of premiership club Southgate overlooked a pristine water pitch, surrounded by the magnificent Trent Park. Everyone was very excited as it was their first chance to play on such a pitch. EHC were even given their own changing room and showers. The day had not started well with two players dropping out.
The team started confidently and dominated the majority of the match. M2 players are now really gelling, readily dropping into spaces to receive passes and finding passing lanes readily. Off the ball movement had visibly improved coming into mid season, and EHC had the ball fizzing to each other on the water pitch.
The team’s pattern of play had become more adventurous with the arrival of Chathurunga, who drilled hard, half-pitch diagonal passes and aerial bombs. One such aerial had Zeya sprinting behind the Southgate line and 1 on 1 with the keeper, who saved well. EHC dominated the final third, with Southgate fielding 10 players in defence for protracted periods.
EHC deservedly scored in the second half. The first goal was scored by Bodhi, after neat stick work and assist by Zeya, slapping a low shot inside the near post. Southgate’s chances were limited by strong EHC marking all over the pitch, and Josh had a quiet day in goal, for once! Then the second goal came in the last quarter, after EHC caused mass confusion in the D. Chatharunga, back to goal, cleverly knocked the ball between his and the keepers leg at short range. Happy boys and men around. Didn’t we say last week that a win was around the corner. Two nil to EHC. Vamos!
